ITAP LECTURE 1 2012

Today we had our first ITAP lecture. It was based on the Recorded Visual Journals we as students have to keep for every project. I got a really good idea of how they run things and what is expected of us.

I have selected "drawing" for my first key point evaluation. I really started to understand the importance of recording every tiny step in the many vast creative processes I will go through during my time here at Birmingham City University. The lecturer referred to a quote by Pablo Picasso; "I began with an idea and then it became something else" I think this is fitting and it got me thinking about how our Recorded Visual Journals become pieces of art work, evidence of a journey and a window into our brains. I also thought about how sometimes it's difficult to try and communicate using words and in some instances the best way to get a point across, or show an idea or plan is to draw it. In documenting every process it also gives you a chance to go back and explore techniques or processes again, or refine an idea you had in the past etc. I think a journal can say a lot about that particular person too, i think the journals will be quite personal too and with that will come the fresh, raw ideas, which can be expanded and moulded. I have worked with this concept before at college and got on really well with it but I did have a tendency to worry a bit to much about the appearance of the physical journal, so I would get a bit behind. below is an example of an artist I have found who's journal clearly shows how drawing develops and aids visual creativity.

For my second key point evaluation I have decided to look at the brain. The theory that we have two sides to our brain, one side being the child's brain that is sensitive and experimental, allowing us to become more free in our approach to materials and providing us with the basis to make our work more individual. The second half of the brain is our more logical one, analysing and evaluating everything we do. This allows us to organise ideas and put plans into action helping us to evaluate which ideas are worth pursuing and developing. below is an fitting visual I have found of this theory and clearly shows the two sides or characteristics of the brain.
